BEFORE THE WAX
Preparation:
- Hair Length: Make sure your hair is the right length—typically about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. If it’s too short, the wax won’t grip the hair effectively.
- Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate the area 24–48 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin cells, reduce discomfort during the wax and help prevent ingrown hairs.
- Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning: Try to avoid sunburns, tanning beds, or sun exposure for at least 24–48 hours before waxing, as freshly tanned skin can be more sensitive and prone to irritation.
- Avoid Lotions and Oils: Don’t apply lotion, oil, or deodorant to the area being waxed on the day of your appointment, as these can interfere with the wax’s grip.
- Pain Management: If you’re concerned about pain, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever (like ibuprofen) about 30 minutes before your appointment. This can help reduce swelling and sensitivity.
Timing:
Try to schedule your appointment for a time when you’re not too stressed or about to start your period, as these factors can make you more sensitive to pain.
AFTER THE WAX
Immediately After:
- Redness and Bumps: It’s normal to experience some redness, bumps, or irritation immediately after waxing. This should subside within a few hours to a day.
- Slight Pain or Tenderness: The area may feel tender, but the pain should be mild and temporary.
- Avoid Heat: For the first 24–48 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, and intense physical activity to minimize irritation and sweating, which can lead to breakouts or irritation.
Post-Wax Care:
- Moisturize: Keep the area moisturized with a gentle, non-scented lotion or aloe vera gel to soothe the skin.
- Exfoliate: Start exfoliating 2–3 days after your wax to help prevent ingrown hairs. This is especially important if you’re waxing regularly.
- Avoid Tight Clothing: After a wax, wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid friction or irritation in the area.
Other Considerations:
- Ingrown Hairs: A regular routine of exfoliation and moisturizing will help reduce the risk.
- Follow-up Sessions: Regular waxing can lead to finer, sparser hair growth over time. Typically, you’ll need to wait 3–4 weeks before waxing again, depending on your hair growth cycle.
LONG TERM EXPECTATIONS
Results:
Waxing typically leaves your skin smooth for 3–6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle.
Hair Growth:
Over time, the more you wax, the finer and slower your hair growth may become. Some people find their hair grows back thinner and weaker after several waxing sessions.
